This is a short essay I wrote for one of my English classes and I liked how it turned out and one of my best friends told me I needed to put it up here. I hope you guys like it 🙂

The “anyone” in e.e. cummings’ “anyone lived in a pretty how town” could quite literally be anyone.

It could be that neighbor down the street who you’ve though a little bit kooky (and if you can’t think of one, then it’s you) or that sweet old lady who never stops talking. “Anyone” could be tall, short or just right in the middle and they could have a sweet beard perfect for a Blackbeard costume or have a mustache perfectly perfect for twirling while thinking up world domination plans. It could be someone that wears bright clothes everyday or someone who wears dark clothes or someone who wears a uniform.

From here to there, it could be anyone that lives in a town, no matter how big or small. Myself and you are perfect candidates as well for being “anyone”. Young and old (and those like I, that are caught in the middle) could be “anyone.”

Those in pain, those feeling joy and even those unsure of what they’re feeling can be “anyone.” Here and far away, from there to over there to the left and back around, well everyone all around could be “anyone.”

And that’s the point here. Anyone in the world, including myself could be the “anyone” in e.e. cummings’ “anyone lived in a pretty how town.”
